Council consulted with Glenroy residents when we planned the Wheatsheaf Community Hub project. In addition to providing community health and education services, the community told us they wanted their new community Hub to feature a community garden.

The garden is part of the Wheatsheaf Community Hub project currently under construction on the site of the former Glenroy Primary School. It will be located on the western side of the new Hub building close to Bridget Shortel reserve and Acacia Street.

There are many different types of community gardens with different aims and ways of operating. Generally, they are parcels of public land set aside for local residents and community groups to grow and share fresh produce.

They may divided into individual allotments or managed collectively with the whole harvest shared among those who maintain the garden. Importantly, they create opportunities for neighbours to connect with each other, to learn new skills, to relax outdoors and produce healthy food to be shared.

Yes! People of all ages and backgrounds in the Glenroy- Hadfield area are encouraged to get involved. You don’t have to have any special skills just a willingness to pitch in and create something wonderful for your community. People will be needed to help with planting, weeding, and watering as well coordinating volunteers and organising community events and activities. All skills and ideas are invited!

We hope a Community Garden Management Group will oversee the first planting of the garden at a special event as part of the launch of the Wheatsheaf Community Hub which is scheduled for early 2022.
