In March-April 2023, Mick received a bigger 240 litre mixed recycling bin. This bin will be collected every 2 weeks from July 2023. The 240 litre mixed recycling bin offers the same amount of recycling space as 120 litres per week.
A new 120 litre glass recycling bin was delivered to Mick's home in May-June 2023. This bin will be collected every 4 weeks (monthly) from 1 July 2023. Putting his glass bottles and jars in this bin will free up space in his mixed recycling bin. Mick can't opt-out of having a glass recycling bin.
If Mick doesn't already have a food and garden organics bin, a 120 litre light green-lidded bin will be delivered to his home in June 2023. This bin will be collected weekly from 1 July 2023.
A kitchen caddy to collect food scraps will also be delivered to Mick's home from July 2023.
Using this bin for food scraps and garden clippings will create more space in Mick's general rubbish bin.
This bin used to be called the green waste bin.
There will be no change to Mick’s general rubbish bin. He will keep his current bin and it will continue to be collected every week.
Mick lives alone and needs help moving the big bins. From August 2023, he can request to have smaller bins. The smallest available bin sizes for each waste stream are:
- 120 litre mixed recycling bin
- 120 litre food and garden organics bin
- 120 litre glass recycling bin
- 80 litre general rubbish bin.
As a ratepayer, Mick pays the waste charge based on the size of each of his bins. Should he choose to get smaller bins, they will pay a lower waste charge, because smaller bins cost less.
Mick doesn't create much waste and recycling and has trouble moving the big bins. If he finds he has trouble moving the larger bin, from August 2023 Mick can request to have a 120 litre mixed recycling bin. This gives Mick a chance to try the standard sized bins and new collection times before deciding what size bins are right for him.
As a ratepayer, Mick pays the waste charge based on the size of each of his bins. Mick may be able to manage with bins that are smaller than the standard size. These may be easier for him to move and will reduce his waste charge.
There is only one size glass recycling bin. Mick may choose to put this bin out every other month if it is not full.
If Mick currently uses Council's Age and Community Support services, he can speak to them about getting help to move his bins on collection day. Or, if he's on an NDIS plan or Home Care Package, he can speak to his case manager to see if this is something they can assist with.
