has young children at home

We need a large garbage bin picked up weekly because of the amount of nappies we have.

In early 2020, the Victorian Government announced that all local council waste services will transition to a four-bin service to reduce waste to landfill, improve the quality of recyclables and have a system that we can rely on.

This change will see the introduction of a new ‘glass only’ recycling stream and a food and garden organics (FOGO) service for all households in Victoria including households with young children.

In Moreland, disposable nappies must be disposed of in the garbage bin, even if they are labelled compostable or biodegradable.

Nappies should always be firmly wrapped before being placed in the garbage (red-lid) bin.

We know nappies smell! Experience at other councils has shown that residents found no difference in the smell of garbage bins with nappies after a fortnight when they were bagged or wrapped in plastic. That is, the odour of the garbage bin after two weeks was rated the same by residents as after one week.

We know nappies fill garbage bins! Regardless of the final service option chosen, residents will continue to be able to choose from a select number of bin sizes to find the right size that suits their needs. For some residents, like those with lots of nappies, this will mean asking for a larger bin. Additional fees may apply for larger bins, however some households will be eligible for a concession.

We are keen to understand how any changes to our waste service can continue to meet the needs of households with young children in nappies, like Mohamed's. Tell us how changes to bin sizes, how often your bins are picked up, and options to encourage the use of cloth nappies will affect your household.

What do you do with your children’s nappies?

Is your bin full on 'bin day'?

Thank you for completing our survey.

Your feedback will help us draft an updated Kerbside Waste Service and Charges Policy that we will present later in 2021.
