lives in an apartment

The people in my apartment block already have trouble separating waste and taking the bins out.

In early 2020, the Victorian Government announced that all local council waste services will transition to a four-bin service to reduce waste to landfill, improve the quality of recyclables and have a system that we can rely on.

This change will see the introduction of a new ‘glass only’ recycling stream and a food and garden organics (FOGO) service for all households in Victoria, including those in apartments.

For some households the glass service may be a fourth bin with a purple lid. For apartment dwellers like Melissa, the service may look different.

If your apartment uses Council’s waste services, your service will change. Currently, most apartment buildings using Council’s waste service can access the food and garden organics (FOGO) service by using shared bins.

We know that the State Government 4-stream policy applies to all households in Victoria, however we are waiting further information from the State Government on how and when the 4-bin service will be rolled out to apartments using private waste contractors.

Apartments have unique challenges when it comes to waste management, so we are seeking community feedback from all residents to understand the issues and how a 4-bin waste service might work for those living in apartments.

Do you have access to a food and garden organics (FOGO) bin (light green lid)?

Thinking about the best place for a drop-off point for glass recycling, what do we need to consider?

How could a booked hard waste service work for your apartment building?

Thank you for completing our survey.

Your feedback will help us draft an updated Kerbside Waste Service and Charges Policy that we will present later in 2021.
